This past saturday I met and worked a bit with Dana and Sean, two fellas paddling around Lake Michigan this summer. Their expedition is called ‘Paddle For a Purpose’ and their blog is here. Their trip is a fundraiser for the Soo chapter of the Red Cross.
They were interested in getting some training and all around just doing the right thing to setup their success. It was neat to work with them. As can be seen from their blog, they are getting good press coverage but they are also working hard on skills. Attending pool sessions at Lake State has been work sessions for them. From listening to them talk, I would have to say that last year they didn’t have the skills for this trip. Working with an instructor, they’ve been building their skills and came across as being ready that way.
Of course, skills are a big part of the equation but there are other parts. Using ones judgment is key to avoiding risky situations and the need to do a rescue in the first place.
Luck also helps and luck often favors those who are prepared.
