Paddle For A Purpose

Sunday, April 26th, 2009

This past saturday I met and worked a bit with Dana and Sean, two fellas paddling around Lake Michigan this summer. Their expedition is called ‘Paddle For a Purpose’ and their blog is here. Their trip is a fundraiser for the Soo chapter of the Red Cross.

They were interested in getting some training and all around just doing the right thing to setup their success. It was neat to work with them. As can be seen from their blog, they are getting good press coverage but they are also working hard on skills. Attending pool sessions at Lake State has been work sessions for them. From listening to them talk, I would have to say that last year they didn’t have the skills for this trip. Working with an instructor, they’ve been building their skills and came across as being ready that way.

Of course, skills are a big part of the equation but there are other parts. Using ones judgment is key to avoiding risky situations and the need to do a rescue in the first place.

Luck also helps and luck often favors those who are prepared.

Spring

Sunday, April 19th, 2009

Here is the current weather story for sunday 4-19-09, the heavy snow is up to 10″. Its been a spring that has been persisted. It is interesting for me as I don’t have anything to train early for this season. Some years I have done an instructor workshop by now which means, no matter the weather, I am out there.

Cold weather paddling is unique. From all the photos we put up from our first paddles, I think that shows. The rediscovering of paddling on open water again as well as the magic of the ice.

Magic is in the shapes the ice takes but also in seeing how subtle weather changes affects the ice. Below is a photo from the gallery. Click on it to see a series of photos and a couple of videos from some of the paddles around the ice.

Given the forecast, the ice will be around for a bit longer and there will be more magic.

Well, first paddle for me happened this past thursday. An ice pack that has been persistent and cool temperatures delayed things until 4-2. Launched at the Presque Isle breakwall. Check out photos in the photo gallery starting with the following one.
